Kerala Landslide Horror: At Least Three Dead, Several Missing After Massive Wayanad Collapse Amid Heavy Rainfall; Tanker Plunges Down Slope

Days of relentless monsoon rain triggered another devastating landslide in Kerala's Wayanad district on Tuesday morning, leaving at least three people dead, several others injured, and many still missing beneath the debris. The tragedy unfolded near the Meenakshi Bridge, where tunnel construction work was underway when a massive section of the hillside suddenly collapsed, burying workers and heavy machinery within seconds.

The powerful landslide also caused a large construction tanker to lose control and plunge down the slope, with dramatic visuals of the incident quickly circulating across social media. The chilling footage captures the terrifying force of the collapse and highlights the scale of destruction caused by the disaster.

According to officials, several workers were engaged in tunnel construction despite continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days. Witnesses said a loud rumble was followed by a massive collapse of earth and rocks, giving workers little or no time to escape. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately and began rescue efforts even before emergency services arrived.

Authorities have confirmed at least three fatalities, while several injured workers are undergoing treatment in nearby hospitals. Rescue teams fear that seven to nine people may still be trapped beneath the debris, raising concerns that the death toll could increase as operations continue.

A large-scale rescue mission involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kerala Police, Fire and Rescue Services, and multiple state agencies has been launched. Nearly thirty trained rescue personnel equipped with heavy machinery and specialised equipment are working around the clock despite persistent rainfall and unstable ground conditions.

Government data shows that parts of Kerala received nearly 265 millimetres of rainfall within the last twenty-four hours, significantly increasing the risk of landslides in the hilly region. While experts attribute the collapse to saturated soil caused by continuous rain, the incident has also sparked a political controversy over the tunnel construction project.

Kerala Minister A.P. Anil Kumar alleged that the project was undertaken despite repeated warnings about the area's geological instability. He accused Konkan Railway authorities of ignoring safety concerns and continuing construction in a vulnerable zone, claiming that the tragedy could have been prevented. The allegations have intensified demands for a thorough investigation into the disaster.

Following the incident, the Kerala Chief Minister convened an emergency review meeting and directed senior ministers and officials to supervise rescue operations on the ground. Authorities have assured that search operations will continue until every missing worker is accounted for. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall across several districts of Kerala, prompting fresh alerts for landslide-prone areas.

The latest disaster has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Wayanad's fragile terrain during the monsoon season. As rescue workers continue their desperate search through tonnes of mud and debris, the state remains on edge, hoping for survivors while mourning another tragic chapter in Kerala's battle against extreme weather.
